Demonstrations Alert

11/07/2007

Spontaneous demonstrations take place in Pakistan from time to time in response to world events or local developments. We remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Upcoming demonstration information follows:

  • Constitution Avenue continues to be closed to general traffic.
  • G-6/4, Street 85, Pakistan Peoples Party Headquarters and Ataturk Avenue: A crowd of 500-600 protesters have gathered, with heavy police presence.
  • Municipal Road, G-6/3, vicinity of the Holiday Inn near Melody Market: At 2 p.m. Ex-Federal Minister J. Salik will organize a demonstration in front of the Press Club of Islamabad.
  • Constitution Avenue, in front of the Supreme Court: At 5 p.m., The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will organize a demonstration to protest against the State of Emergency. Approximately 2,000 PPP workers may participate. Although police barricades are up, the PPP group may try to overrun the police checkpoints.
