Warden Notice 22/2007

07/10/2007

The U.S. Embassy recommends that American citizens limit their movement in the Peshawar area for several days due to non-specific public announcements by terrorist elements in Bajaur tribal agency that they plan to unleash attacks on Pakistani governmental, police, and army institutions in retaliation for recent events at the Lal Masjid complex in Islamabad. In the past, militants in the tribal areas have conducted mass-casualty attacks on settled areas, including Peshawar, soon after military action. Additionally, the possibility exists that these attacks could also be directed against US and other western interests and individuals in other areas. The US Embassy and Consulates recommend that all American Citizens remain particularly vigilant during the next several weeks.

Clashes between the government and individuals inside the Red Mosque area in Islamabad continue. The Government of Pakistan is maintaining the curfew in the G-6 sector. Until the security situation is settled, the Red Mosque/Melody Market/Aabpara areas should continue to be avoided, and Americans residing in the G-6 sector are encouraged to leave the area. Citizens should be aware that once they have left the G-6 sector, they may be unable to return for some time due to the curfew. American Citizens should actively monitor local media reports for information on the situation and to learn when the curfew is lifted.

We would like to remind the American citizen community of the need to stay alert, to be aware of your surroundings, to reduce travel to minimum acceptable levels, and to act self-defensively at all times. American citizens should vary their routes and times, avoid areas where Westerners are known to congregate, and maintain a low profile. The Embassy would like to remind American citizens that threats, protests and demonstrations may occur throughout Pakistan without prior notice or warning, and on occasion have turned violent. We therefore recommend that American citizens avoid all demonstrations and protests.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1161.html and the Pakistan Consular Information Sheet http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_992.html and Travel Warning can be found.
