U.S. Relations With Pakistan Are Important: Senator Lieberman

Islamabad – The U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman has reiterated that both parties in Congress are keen to promote “broad-based and long-term relationship” with Pakistan adding that the United States and Pakistan “shared values and common interests.”

“The United States’ relations with Pakistan are very important,” Senator Lieberman said while addressing a crowded press conference at the conclusion of his visit to Pakistan here today.

The U.S. Senator said that he has been assured by President Musharraf and Prime Minister Soomro that the elections would be held on February 18 and that they would be free, fair and transparent. “Fair elections are important for the future of Pakistan.”

Replying to a question Senator Lieberman said, “I am reassured and impressed by the briefing given to him by General Khalid Kidwai on the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons.”

Answering another question the American Senator said that he had raised the issue of the freedom of Press in Pakistan with President Musharraf.
