01/30/2008

Khanewal - The Principal Officer of the U.S. Consulate Lahore, Bryan D. Hunt said that the U.S. has initiated “a series of programs to strengthen socio-economic development” in Pakistan during his meetings in Khanewal District.

“Our goal is to assist the Pakistani people to raise the socioeconomic indicators, to give them hope for the future,” stated the U.S. diplomat. He noted however, that the “lion’s share of human resources, planning and ideas comes from Pakistanis” in the public and private sectors.

In his meeting with District Nazim Ahmad Yar Hiraj, the U.S. diplomat outlined USAID initiatives in Pakistan for health, governance, economic growth, and education.

Khanewal is among the six districts selected for USAID’s ‘Districts That Work’ project which supports the Pakistan government’s efforts to devolve decision-making, resource management, and service delivery to the grassroots level.

Earlier on, Mr. Hunt visited Multan where he delivered an address at the Bahauddin Zakariya University, and visited the Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He also attended Access Mela where students from five schools participating in the Access English Microscholarship Program delivered speeches and various presentations.
