USAID Administrator Discusses Development Issues in NWFP, FATA with Governor and FATA Secretariat

04/24/2008

Peshawar -- The United States Director of Foreign Assistance and Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Henrietta H. Fore, met with the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) Governor, Owais Ahmed Ghani, and FATA Officials here today and discussed development issues facing the province and the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA).

“The U.S. government is committed to helping Pakistan address its development challenges,” said Ms. Fore.  “To meet those challenges, the American people and the government believe that the people of NWFP and FATA deserve better schools, healthier mothers, children and families, better service delivery mechanisms, and opportunities to increase their economic prosperity.”  In her meeting with the Governor, Ms. Fore reviewed U.S. support managed by the USAID in FATA and across Pakistan.  In particular, they discussed the more than $750 million dollars worth of support over five years to the FATA which the U.S. is providing to improve education, strengthen the delivery of quality health care and to expand economic opportunities.

Ms. Fore also visited the Gems and Gemological Institute of Pakistan (GGIP) to learn how USAID programs are helping build public-private sector partnerships that enhance economic activity.  Through support from USAID, the private sector, and the Ministries of Commerce and Industry, the GGIP has recruited Sri Lankan gemstone specialists to train Pakistani gems and jewelry artisans in improving the efficiency and quality of their gemstone finishing.

“This Gems and Gemological Institute of Pakistan is a good example of the partnerships that USAID encourages,” said Ms. Fore.

Since 2002, the U.S. Government has provided more than $2 billion to Pakistan to improve economic growth, education, health and governance and to assist with earthquake reconstruction.
