USAID Sets Up Media Center at Balochistan Assembly

05/05/2008

Quetta – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) inaugurated today a media center at the Balochistan Provincial Assembly.  The media center provides journalists with the technology they need to cover and report the Assembly’s proceedings.

“We strongly believe that a vibrant democracy requires free and responsible media,” said Michael Hryshchyshyn, Director of the USAID-Pakistan Office of Democracy and Governance.  “By giving people timely and correct information about what is happening inside the Assembly, the media enable people to gauge the performance of their representatives.”

As part of USAID’s $7.8 million Pakistan Legislative Strengthening Project, the media center is equipped with more than $16,000 in computer facilities, Internet access, and photocopying, printing, faxing, and scanning equipment.  The project also established a similar Parliamentary Information Technology Resource Center to help Balochistan Assembly Members serve their constituents more effectively.

Since 2002, the U.S. Government has provided more than $2 billion to Pakistan to improve economic growth, education, health, and governance, and to assist with earthquake reconstruction.
