U.S. Supports Strengthening of Democratic Governance in Pakistan, Says American Diplomat

August 18, 2008

Islamabad - Mr. Gerald M. Feierstein, Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Pakistan, addressed the “National Workshop on Successful Models for Urban Renewal and Rural Reconstruction” presided over by the Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani and organized by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

“We appreciate the efforts of Prime Minister Gillani and the Government of Pakistan … and stand committed to supporting the federal and provincial governments as they move forward to strengthen democratic governance in the country,  “ said Mr. Feierstein in expressing support for the workshop as a guide for the future development of governance in Pakistan.

The workshop brings together selected international, national, provincial and district level stakeholders for a policy dialogue on existing frameworks, institutions, systems, gaps and challenges. Specific areas discussed included livelihoods and poverty alleviation, environment, services and infrastructure and identification of best practices in local governance in both urban and rural areas.

The workshop connected local government administrators to national centers of excellence and international resources. Specifically, findings from this workshop identified areas that require additional capacity development.

“Initiatives such as this workshop need to ensure that all voices are heard so as to arrive at decisions which address the realities on the ground and solutions which have ownership across the political spectrum and results in tangible benefits to the people of this country,” he said. USAID will continue to support democracy and governance projects that provide an environment allowing more effective governance and better service delivery to the citizens of Pakistan.

The U.S. Government provides Pakistan $1.5 billion through USAID over five years to improve education, health, governance, economic growth and for earthquake reconstruction.
