U.S. Consulate Holds Election Event for Students
(Students participate in Mock Presidential Debate, Mock Poll)
November 4, 2008
Lahore - Principal Officer of the U.S. Consulate, Bryan D. Hunt, highlighted the "importance of elections in a democracy" as he greeted 60 students from Lahore’s educational institutions to the U.S. Consulate for an event to celebrate the American Presidential elections.
"Today’s youth hold the key to the future. I was impressed by the intelligent arguments you put forth as you represented the Democratic and Republican parties," remarked the U.S. diplomat after he observed the students’ mock Presidential debate.
Hosted on the day of the U.S. Presidential elections, the event was organized by the U.S. Educational Foundation, Pakistan (USEFP).
"There has been immense global interest in these U.S. elections, the campaigns, the main contenders, and the issues in focus," noted Mr. Bryan Hunt.
Public Affairs Officer Traci Mell briefed students on the U.S. electoral process -- explaining the primaries and caucuses, campaigning strategies and the Electoral College. The event concluded with a mock poll where the students put their weight behind their favorite U.S. Presidential candidate.
The event was one in a series of several programs hosted by U.S. Consulate Lahore to mark the American Presidential elections. Programs included screenings of Senators John McCain and Barack Obama biographical documentaries for journalists and students; lectures at colleges in Lahore and Faisalabad; and special presentations on the elections during the recently concluded American History Course.
