U.S. Government Funds Community Organizations to Improve Mother and Children's Health in Swat
November 20, 2008
Islamabad - The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), signed a $500,000 grant today with eleven local NGOs to fund child and maternal health care activities in Swat.
"As a former health officer I know from first-hand experience the value of the work you will be doing and the impact it can have on improving the quality of lives for mothers, infants and entire communities." said Anne Aarnes, Mission Director, USAID/Pakistan, while addressing representatives of the partner organizations.
Funded under USAID's six-year, $93 million ‘Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns' (PAIMAN) project, NGOs will train traditional birth attendants, establish birthing centers, and vaccinate mothers against tetanus. PAIMAN, originally implemented in 10 districts of Pakistan, now has been launched in 23 districts, including two FATA Agencies and two Frontier Regions.
Since 2002, the U.S. Government has provided more than $2 billion to Pakistan to improve economic growth, education, health, and governance and to assist with earthquake reconstruction.
