Statement by U.S. Ambassador Anne W. Patterson on One Year Anniversary of Benazir Bhutto as broadcast by Pakistan Television (PTV)

Today on the first anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's tragic death, we remember a woman whose dedication to democracy, courage and vision continue to inspire the people of Pakistan.

Former Prime Minister realized that her return to Pakistan could put her life in jeopardy and she was deeply saddened by the first attack after her return that claimed so many lives.  But she did not allow fear to dampen her aspirations for Pakistan. I called on her soon after the bombing of her convoy in Karachi on October 18th and was enormously impressed by her courage, her poise and her focus on Pakistan's future.

During the short time I had the honor to know her, I admired Benazir's tenacity and unyielding resolve to create a unified, stable, and democratic Pakistan.  She spoke often of the two great needs of her country: the need for jobs and a better support for Pakistan's poorest citizens and a strong democracy.  She was convinced that these twin goals would create the security and prosperity the Pakistani people deserved.

Benazir's vision of a vibrant, democratic Pakistan is her legacy. Her husband, President Asif Zardari, and her children carry on this legacy.  Her vision continues to inspire the people of this country now, a year after her untimely death, and will live on for years to come.

As we commemorate her life, it is imperative that the principles she stood for, such as the rule of law, transparency in government, tolerance, and the protection of human rights, be nurtured and allowed to flourish. The United States will continue stand by the people of Pakistan as they strive to achieve these goals and overcome the challenges that lie ahead.

Benazir is no longer with us, but the spirit of democracy will live on in the people of Pakistan.
