Message to the People of Pakistan from U.S. Ambassador Anne W. Patterson on the Occasion of New Year's Day

December 31, 2008

The New Year is always a time for reflection, both on events of the year gone by, and on hopes and goals for the year to come.  The year 2008 offered up many challenges for Pakistan, the United States and the world at large, but this year was also filled with events that should bring us enormous pride.

In the last year both the United States and Pakistan held historic elections.  Pakistan's election brought the voice of the people back into the houses and halls of government.  Americans raised their voices in our election as well, and voted our first African American President into office.

The Olympics of 2008 were another highlight of this year.  Pakistanis, Americans, and the people of over two hundred other countries showed us the endurance, strength and power of the human body - and the human spirit.  Watching these athletes compete with passion, yet without spite, was an honor and an inspiration.

Reflecting upon all of these good moments in 2008 gives me hope for the year to come.  I am excited about the opportunities 2009 will offer Americans and Pakistanis to work together, and I wish the people of Pakistan all the best in the New Year.
