U.S. Consulate General Lahore Hosts American History Course in Lahore
November 20, 2009
Lahore - U.S. Consul General in Lahore Carmela Conroy told participants during the final session of the five-day Survey of American History course today that support for education in Pakistan is a high priority for the U.S. Government. The course was part of a week of education-related programs celebrating during International Education Week.
"Education is the path to empowerment and employment opportunities," Consul General Conroy said. Ms. Conroy also outlined the growing number of educational partnerships and scholarships supported by the United States for young Pakistani scholars. She reiterated Secretary Hillary Clinton's pledge at Government College University in Lahore last month that the U.S. "will give $45 million to Pakistan's Higher Education Commission to expand both university and technical education for students in economically vulnerable areas."
The "Survey of American History" course, arranged annually since 1988, took participants chronologically from the origins of the United States as a colony, the evolution of its democratic institutions, the Civil War, and its growth as a major power since the Second World War. The series of lectures were given by Pakistani scholars and American diplomats.
U.S. Consulate General Lahore and the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) hosted a variety of events in connection with International Education Week. There were presentations on higher education opportunities in the United States at several local colleges, training programs for educational advisors, and a reception in honor of American-funded exchange program alumni from programs such as Fulbright.
