Islamabad - The United States government donated 20 ambulances and 33 four-wheel drive trucks to Pakistan's Frontier Corps in Peshawar Province today.
Mr. James Flowers from the U.S. Consulate Peshawar officially delivered the vehicles to Frontier Corps officials during a hand-over ceremony today in Hayatabad.
The new vehicles will strengthen the Frontier Corps' ability to provide security and stability in the Northwest Frontier Province and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. To date, the United States has provided 17 ambulances, 85 four-wheel drive trucks, 13 water trucks and about 120 troop carriers to the Frontier Corps. In addition, a delivery of 18 water trucks and about 130 troop carriers vehicles is planned in the near future.
"It is our hope that this gift of vehicles from the United States will assist Pakistan in their noble and worthy cause," said U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson. "We pay special tribute to the gallantry and extraordinary sacrifices by Pakistan's military forces, government personnel, and civilians as they fight violent extremists to protect their country."
In 2009, U.S. civilian and security assistance to Pakistan totaled about $3 billion and has included medical, education and water assistance, food, 10 Mi-17 helicopters, hundreds of night vision goggles, day/night scopes, radios, thousands of protective vests and first-aid items.
